 Visit San Agustin with DWVC

Regardless of what you look for in a holiday, I am sure it would deliver.

The accommodation in the area is all top notch. The hotel Dunas Don Gregory, for example, is located right next to the beach with security gate entry. It has 224 rooms spread over 9 floors accessible by 4 lifts, each of these rooms are air conditioned, well decorated and have satellite television (although I very much doubt you’ll ever bother turning it on unless, like myself, you turn it on to one of the radio stations while preparing for a night out), a fridge and a safe. resort has a large swimming pool, solarium with sun loungers, sunshades and towels, a fitness room and floodlit tennis court and pool tables. There is a buffet restaurant but if like me you like to be served, I’d just go for a bed and breakfast package and eat out at one of the numerous restaurants a short walk away.

A weeks bed and breakfast (17th to 24th April 07) for two at the Dunas Don Gregory in a double room would only cost Ł316 through DWVC, however if you are not a member of DWVC it would cost at least Ł686 booking through a travel agent (the cheapest I found was hotelclub.com).

The beach is clean and flat and gradually slopes into the sea. It also has a new promenade that goes from the start of San Augustin to the far end of Playa Del Inglés (that’s where the paved area stopped when I visited but they did seem to be extending it).

The weather is fantastic even outside of the dates that most European destinations can offer, in November (when I went) temperatures were still topping 30°C and clear blue skies were there to me every time I opened the curtains in the morning, as you would expect from a Canary Island there was a breeze all day that meant it never felt too hot.

The night life is varied with cabaret type shows at most hotels, a 15 minute walk to Playa Del Inglés you find my personal favourite, the Kazba centre that provides a variety of restaurants and lively nightlife that goes on until daybreak and beyond, another 5 to 10 minutes away you find the Yumbo centre, a well known gay spot that’s colourful and entertaining in the early evening but (in my opinion) maybe gets a bit heavy for any non gay visitors later on. There is also a number of other centres that I did not get the chance to visit but was told offer everything in between.

There are a number of different locations worth visiting during the day. Puerto de Mojan is well worth a visit to take in some of Gran Canaria’s culture. Palmitos Park is a large bird park/zoo with amazing displays, it also has an aquarium and reptile house. Sioux City is a Wild West theme park with live shows, a petting and barbeque nights throughout the whole year, it was originally built as a stage set for a Western film back in the 1970s. As with most holiday destinations there is also a large Aqualand water park.
